ST. GEORGE – The police released additional details regarding the homicide that occurred in St. George on Saturday. They are also asking for anyone who has any additional information concerning the incident to step forward.
In a statement issued Monday, Capt. Kyle Whitehead said the St. George Communications Center received a call at 1:21 a.m. Saturday regarding a disturbance in the 1000 North block on 1340 West of St. George. Officers who responded to the scene encountered a male who appeared to be unconscious, later identified as Jeramy Shawn Olsen, 31, of St. George.
Paramedics responded to provide medical assistance. During their assessment of Olsen it was determined his injuries were very serious and he would need to go directly to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for treatment. Olsen was previously characterized as having suffered significant head injuries. Life Flight was contacted and Olsen was airlifted directly to UMC.
The police department began an investigation into what happened and what had caused Olsen’s condition.
Police were quickly able to identify Mario Lucero, 31, who may have been involved in an assault against Olsen. An aggravated assault warrant for the arrest of Lucero was issued. Additionally, Lucero is on parole with Adult Probation and Parole and a second warrant was issued for a parole violation.
Police continued to follow up on leads in an attempt to locate Lucero and identify witnesses. On Sunday the police were notified that Olsen had died as a result of injuries from the assault.
On Monday the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department contacted the St. George Police and notified them that Lucero had been arrested in California.
Whitehead said the police have the extradition process in motion to bring Lucero back to Utah.
The police are continuing to follow leads and are working closely with Washington County Attorney’s Office in this case. They believe there are other individuals who may have information that will help the investigation.
