Capture the Caribbean and Children’s Jubilee: Ahoy Pirates; Caribbean calypso comes to Cedar City

CEDAR CITY – Caribbean steel drum band and world music ensemble, Caribbean Sound joins the Orchestra of Southern Utah for their Capturing the Caribbean Concert on Feb. 21 and their Children’s Jubilee: Ahoy Pirates on Feb. 23. Ahoy Pirates is best suited for children under 6.

Enjoy an exciting evening on Feb. 21 of steel drums and tropical splendor at the Capturing the Caribbean Concert as the Orchestra of Southern Utah and special guests Caribbean Sound present a show-stopping entertainment experience that will capture your attention and your imagination.  Centered on steel drums, the concert mixes the sound and culture of the Caribbean through Calypso, Soca, and Latin music with classical, american pop and original compositions.  Event details and prices are provided at the close of this story.

Caribbean Sound is sailing into Cedar City for the event.  This Caribbean steel drum band from New Orleans tours the U.S. bringing their fantastic talents and the wonderful sound of the steel pan with them. This one-of-a-kind ensemble provides children and adults the opportunity to cross cultural barriers and discover the amazing influences from around the world that came together to create the steel pan.

The Children’s Jubilee: Ahoy Pirates is a children’s interactive science and art event including a one-day museum, and a 2 p.m. Caribbean Sound concert. All ages are welcome to explore science, art and music in new and exciting ways.  The science portion will include displays on how wild animals navigate by the stars. And the Southern Utah University will bring live island creatures;  provide activities with cannons, waves, and pirate ship sailing vectors. Children will learn about the geology of islands and beaches and enjoy an indoor planetarium. Event details and prices are provided at the close of this story.

Caribbean Sound has enthralled audiences and received rave reviews throughout the country:

The Arts & Humanities Council of Charlotte County, Fla. reviewed Carribbean Sound, writing it “had the audience dancing on the beach and in the parking lots. It was exactly as we envisioned the event.”

Cecil Cole, Artistic Administrator for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra said, “Caribbean Sound was the highlight of our Family Series.”

Jim Tanck, Chairmen of Evenings in Olde Seville Square proclaimed Caribbean Sound had the highest audience ratings in the history of the Evenings in Olde Seville Square.  “We absolutely want the Caribbean Sound back!” said Tanck.

This concert is one of two Challenge America grant projects in Utah funded by the National Endowment of the Arts this year.  Matching grants from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and other donors also make this exciting musical event possible. Ahoy Pirates’ sponsors include  Color Country Pediatrics and Rocky Mountain Power.

Admission: $10 for adults and $5 for students. Ages 6 and up only, this concert is recorded; under 6, see Ahoy Pirates (below).

Group Discount: Groups of six are $30.

Recommended: Advance purchase of tickets is recommended.

Schedule: Displays open at 1 p.m. and Capture the Caribbean concert begins at 2 p.m.

Admission: $5 per person, children under 1 are free. One ticket free per family for three food cans for Cedar City Care & Share.
