ST. GEORGE – Teachers, students and the public interested in art and art education may consider attending the “Evening of Educators” at Dixie State College of Utah (then to be Dixie State University) on Feb. 22 and the Utah Art Education Association‘s 2013 “Art in the Sun Conference” from Feb. 21-23 at Pine View High School.
Both are part of Utah’s “StateWide Art Partnership,” or SWAP, which is one of the longest-running program series of its kind.
Evening of Educators
Evening of Educators is free to all from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the North Plaza Art Building of Dixie State, sponsoredin part by Crayola, which will provide several products for teachers to sample.
The evening will provide a keynote address by renowned artist Roland Lee entitled “Seeing Earth Through the Eyes of an Artist,” workshops taught by art educators Lori Wrankle, from Hurricane; retired Southern Utah University associate professor Arlene Braithwaite; elementary school educator Janna Gifford, from Springdale; and Mary Wells, artist in residence with the Utah Arts Council and Crayola representative for Utah.
A packet of lesson plans will be available for a donation of $5, including corresponding images.
“This event will continue to be an opportunity to introduce teachers to Dixie State … and our art department,” Dixie State’s Sears Art Museum Gallery curator Kathy Ciselewicz said. “There is an emphasis on encouraging teachers to bring their students to visit the Dixie campus and see the exhibits in our Sears Art Museum Gallery.”
Art in the Sun Conference
The Utah Art Education Association’s 2013 Art in the Sun Conference, geared for professional art educators, will be held Feb. 21–23, at Pine View High School.
Featured speakers will be a master teacher – former student / working artist team of Greg Stanforth and Bob Fisher, presenting formulae for teaching students to use sketchbooks for exploratory drawing. Stanforth is a 30-year teacher and Fisher has been creative director for Cartoon Network.
Among other things, the conference includes a “paintout” led by Michael Bingham at the St. George Art Museum.
