Grand Canyon National Park opens lottery for 2014 private river trip permits

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – Today, the National Park Service began accepting applications for private river trip permits to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park.

A total of 450 permits will be available for 12 to 25-day trips in 2014. Individuals must apply online.  Trips must be self-guided, and technical whitewater experience is mandatory. Applications will be accepted until noon on Feb. 26.

Every February, a lottery is held to assign launch dates for river trips occurring the next year. Follow-up lotteries are held as needed throughout the remainder of the year to reassign canceled or leftover trips.

The lottery web site can be accessed year-round. Individuals interested in private river trip permits are strongly encouraged to create an online account and sign up for email notifications. Applications are accepted only when lotteries are open.

Individuals interested in professionally-guided river trips should not apply through the lottery, but instead should request space on a commercial trip. A list of companies offering guided trips can be found on the park web site.

For more information on the 2014 permit lottery and application process, contact the River Permits Office at 928-638-7884 or [email protected].
