HURRICANE – Four-wheel enthusiasts will gather Jan. 25 and 26 for the fourth annual Winter on the Rocks off road and rock crawling event. Sponsored by the Utah 4×4 Club, the off-road and rock crawling event draws hundreds of participants, and combines fun with increasing awareness of public lands issues.

Local residents may not be not aware that Southern Utah boasts rock crawling trails that are just as difficult and fun as any trails in Moab. Many trails in the event are extreme, but easier trails are also on the schedule.

There will be scenic routes for stock vehicles, medium-difficulty trails for modified vehicles, and extreme routes for the hard-core enthusiasts. Both novice and experienced drivers with rigs of any type are invited to attend.

Most of the 15 Winter on the Rocks trails are located in the Sand Mountain off-highway vehicle area, adjacent to Sand Hollow State Park. This area is designated by Bureau of Land Management specifically for off-road vehicle use. Most public lands do not allow this type of use, and the Utah 4×4 Club encourages all users to be aware of restrictions and “Tread Lightly!”

Participants in Winter on the Rocks 2013 will gather at the Washington County Regional Park’s Fairgrounds, South 5300 West, in Hurricane Jan. 25 and 26. Activities include trail rides, breakfast and dinner at the fairgrounds and other activities.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to land use organizations such as Utah Shared Access Alliance, Take Back Utah, and the BlueRibbon Coalition. These nonprofit organizations advocate for the responsible use of public lands and help fight road closures.

The Utah 4×4 Club is dedicated to the responsible use of our public lands. Activities range from hard-core rock crawling to easy family outings to public lands cleanup. If you enjoy off road travel and adventure, we invite you to join us for a little fun.

This event is not set up for and does not lend itself to spectators.
