ST. GEORGE – First responders descended on Jimmy John’s restaurant on River Road after receiving reports that a pickup truck had smashed into the back of the building Friday morning.
A male in his mid-70s was driving a Ford F-150 northbound on River Road around 11 a.m. when witnesses said the truck suddenly swerved to the left, jumped the curb and slammed into the back of Jimmy John’s.
Mike McMicken, one of the witnesses, said the driver barely missed oncoming traffic, including himself, and looked as though the truck was getting faster as it cut across the road.
“He looked like he was accelerating,” McMicken said.
No one inside Jimmy John’s was hurt. Firefighters inspected the inside of the building and determined there was no major damage.
St. George Police Department Officer Jace Hutchings said the cause of the accident is currently unknown. The driver was taken to Intermountain Healthcare Southwest Region’s Dixie Regional Medical Center, was described as being conscious and alert, and told emergency personnel nothing hurt.
It has yet to be determined if anything medically-related led to the incident; Hutchings said there was no sign of alcohol or other forms of impairment.
The scene was cleared at around 11:45 a.m.
