Christmas volunteer opportunities in the St. George area

ST. GEORGE – With Christmas near at hand, some in the community have expressed a desire to give back through volunteer service during the holiday season.  Here are a handful of volunteer opportunities taking place in the St. George area.

Kony’s Coins for Kids

Coins for Kids will be openly accepting volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Volunteers can go to the Wal-Mart in Bloomington from 5-10 p.m. to help shop for families in need. Volunteers will be given a clipboard of items to buy, and are encouraged to shop for several families. It is suggested individuals wear a coat, as many volunteers have formed long lines outside of Wal-Mart in the past as they waited for the shopping to start.

Volunteers can also go to the Dixie Center in St. George Thursday from 8 a.m. on for gift-wrapping. Thousands of presents are wrapped during this time. Participants are asked to bring two rolls of wrapping paper if they are able. Scissors and tape are provided. People can also donate tape, scissors, clipboards, name tags, ribbons, and related gift-wrapping materials.

No pre-registration is required for the shopping or the wrapping.

On Friday, Santas and Santa-helpers will be needed to help deliver toys to homes throughout the county. Prospective Santas are asked to supply their own suits, though some suits are available for a $20 deposit.  Individuals interested in playing the part of Santa need to contact Hal Halford at 673-8215 for details. Deliveries are takebn from the Dixie Center and go from 4-9 p.m.

Donations can still be made to Coins for Kids. For more information, visit the Coins for Kids website.

Solomon’s Porch Foursquare Followship

Though Solomon’s Porch Foursquare Followship is not holding any event specific to Christmas, Pastor Jimi Kestin invites the public to participate in the church’s weekly Sunday Feast.

Kestin said up to 100 meals are served each week at the Solomon’s Porch Fourquare for individuals in need. He estimated the church has served close to 5,000 meals thus far. For people interested in lending a hand on Sunday, he said, “We always find ways to add people who want to help.”

The Sunday Feast is served at noon on Sundays at Solomon’s Porch Foursquare Followship, 410 East Tabernacle, St. George. Prospective volunteers can contact Kestin at 435-669-8153 for more details.
