ST. GEORGE – An 817,000-square-foot distribution center for  Family Dollar Stores, Inc., first announced in March 2012, is more than halfway complete in the Ft. Pierce Industrial Park area of St. George. The building for the $80 million highly automated facility is on schedule for completion by the end of January 2013, with shipping out of the facility expected to begin by July 1 of that year.

St. George News met with Project Superintendent Brad Meyer Friday.

“The first phase was due at the beginning of December,” Meyer said, “we turned that over to the conveyor company, which got started on schedule. We’re due to turn over phase two at the end of this month and phase three will be ready to turn over to the conveyor company at the end of January (2013).”

The facility is expected to be up and running, stocking the building, by mid-April, with final turnover at the end of June, Meyer said.

Family Dollar declined to release information on how many jobs, how much payroll or contract dollars have been expended to date on the construction of the facility, which St. George News sought to appraise the economic stimulation Family Dollar has already brought to the Washington County local economy.  Nonetheless, it is evident that the company is bringing a vital contribution to the economic development of the region.

According to statements included in a joint statement on behalf of  the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Family Dollar Stores, Inc. March 30, 2012, the company will, over the life of its agreement with the state, hire approximately 450 new full-time employees with the new jobs all including full health and retirement benefits. In his status interview included with this report, Meyer said that 300-350 of those will be filled over the next few months and the hiring process is now open online.

Employment opportunities

Family Dollar is currently taking applications online, starting with management positions. The company’s public relations manager, Bryn Winburn, provided the following list of positions currently or soon to be listed:

•  Maintenance Positions are currently posted.
•  Select Management Positions are currently posted.
•  Production Team Member positions will be posted in early to mid-January 2013.

Interested applicants may apply online for all of the above (careers section).

The company’s human resources department will arrive at the facility in January; initial interviews will begin in February, and Meyer said that positions will be filled in a staged process from January through March 2013.

Interested job applicants may also visit the Family Dollar booth at the “What’s Up Down South” Economic Summit, Jan. 16 from 2-5 p.m. in the Ballroom at Dixie State College of Utah.

UPDATE Dec. 18, 2012: In response to reader inquiries regarding difficulties actually submitting applications online, as invited per Family Dollar representatives as reported in this story, St. George News contacted Family Dollar and received the following reply from Bryn Winburn, public relations manager:

“SELECT positions are currently posted and production jobs will be posted in January.  Once posted, applicants will be able to apply online.  Until the jobs are posted, we aren’t taking applications.  The links below will take you to the maintenance and management positions that are currently posted for St. George.  If applicants search and look for positions in Utah, they should be able to find these.

        Joyce,
I would love if you could get any info about the people that family dollar has said to have hired. There are several people in the same boat as Jonathon. Being told they have the job and that they would hear back in a couple of weeks and that was 3 months ago.
You call their corporate office and they have no phone # or anything for St.george and as far as they know there is no Human Resources yet????

Would love to see if you can get a current story out there.

        • Big Don May 14, 2013 at 2:02 pm

Have you tried physically going out to their DC? I don’t know if you can talk to anyone out there or not, but that would seem to me to be a logical thing to try.

  • DoubleTap May 14, 2013 at 2:32 pm

I have a relative who is being displaced from Viracon and who has had two seperate interviews with Family Dollar. At his last interview he also was told he was being hired and that they would be calling him. That was 2 months ago. He can’t get in touch with anyone either to inquire about his start date. This has also occurred to other people I am aware of. So what’s the big secret at Family Dollar?? My relative has tried to go onto the facility and has been told there is no one that could assist him and turned back. Again, what is the big secret?? Is Family Dollar merely going to go through the motions and “appear” to be hiring so as to get the promised “incentives ” or what??? Joyce, maybe there is a follow-up story you could do. I know there are a lot of prospective employees out there wanting answers. Thanks.

  • amber June 13, 2013 at 1:00 pm

I received a second email saying that I passed my drug/background screen and they will give me 3 weeks notice for my job. It is now mid june. This is frustrating not knowing what’s going on and its been like this the whole time.
