WASHINGTON CITY – Last night, Washington city celebrated its annual tree lighting ceremony at Veterans Park and the Washington City Youth Council hosted an open house at the historic Covington Mansion.

Festivities began with a greeting from the mayor Kenny Nelson. Maggie Peterson sang “When Christmas Comes To Town.” Citizens, friends and neighbors joined in a countdown to the magical lighting of the tree and all were entertained by local elementary school choirs.

And then, every visitor received a special golden ticket to climb aboard the “Dixie Express” for a memorable train ride to the historic Covington Mansion, which just happens to be the oldest home in Washington County.

Covington Mansion is an 1859-built landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, recently acquired by the city and taken on as a restoration project of the  Washington City Youth Council this year, their largest project of the year. The hard work of the Youth Council was evident and showcased in this Christmas advent event.

Upon arrival at the mansion, children of all ages were cheerfully greeted by jolly Old Saint Nick himself. Visitors were able to tour the historic home regally decorated for the Christmas season.

If ever there was any doubt, there surely is none now: Christmas has definitely come to town in Washington City. See for yourself as you take an express tour through our photo gallery:
