ST. GEORGE – Utah Highway Patrol responded to a 2:15 p.m. call Monday regarding a single vehicle accident off Interstate 15 at mile post 29 northbound.

A 1986 red Chevy Corvette convertible, with its top down, went off the left side of the road in a construction area where Utah Department of Transportation is building a left side-lane, Cpl. Todd Johnson of the UHP said.  The vehicle, driven by Robert L. Mohlengraft, 63, of Cedar City, went off the median and hit the embankment. The Corvette continued a distance north on the embankment until the median dropped off into a small ravine. It went off the embankment and rotated forward, end over end through the air until it struck a small quarry of rocks with the rear portion of the vehicle. The ravine continued to drop and after impacting, the Corvette continued to fall eventually landing on its roof facing the opposite direction, some 40 feet from the highway.

Mohlengraft, died on scene as a result of the crash. Evidence of Methamphetamine was discovered in the debris of the crash.

Speed was not a factor in the accident. UHP investigation will continue as to possible impairment of the driver.

Mohlengraft was the only occupant of the vehicle.
