MOHAVE COUNTY – The 16-mile long repaving project on Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona is more than half complete, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers traveling on this segment of I-15 should prepare for restrictions as work continues through Oct. 5.

Drivers can expect the following:

Work hours will be 4 p.m. to noon MST seven days per week.

  • A single-lane closure will be in effect 24 hours per day through each work zone, which will allow crews to remove old pavement and apply new pavement more efficiently. The closure is currently in the southbound direction and beginning next week, will switch to the northbound direction.
  • Saturday through Sunday, Sept. 29, 30 – crews will repave the southbound right lane, which will be closed 24 hours per day.
  • Delays of up to 5 to 8 miles were reported on I-15 by drivers and Arizona Department of Public Safety around 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday. An accident involved two vehicles did occur near milepost 24 around 5 p.m. and blocked the left lane for a brief period of time. The primary cause of the traffic delays is attributed to road work, however.
  • Monday through Friday, Oct. 1 – 5 – crews will repave the northbound I-15 left lane, which will be closed 24 hours per day.
  • Monday, Oct. 1 – Crews will repave the northbound Cedar Pockets on and off ramps at milepost 18, requiring the closure of the ramps during work hours.

●   The speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

The $11.6 million project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of October, includes removal of a layer of the existing pavement and repaving the roadway from the Virgin River Gorge to the Utah State line – mileposts 13-29.

Individuals seeking to avoid the repaving work in the Virgin River Gorge are advised to take Highway 91 as an alternate route. The highway bypasses the gorge entirely. Southbound travelers will reconnect with I-15 at Littlefield, Ariz., while northbound travelers will follow the route into Santa Clara and then St. George via Sunset Boulevard.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
