ST. GEORGE – For anyone who likes participating in a good cause and getting dirty while doing it, the Dixie Mud Run is right up your alley.

To be held on Oct. 13, 2012, at the Staheli Family Farm, the Dixie Mud Run is a charitable event aimed at raising money for children with serious medical conditions, all while throwing runners into a 5-kilometer long, mud-covered obstacle course.

“Obstacles will include mud pits, a mud crawl, huge Slip’n Slides, a tire run, a hay bale crossing, a wall climb, tunnels and more,” said Ryan Hughes, one of the chief organizers of the Dixie Mud Run.

Prizes will also be awarded to specific categories, like fastest male finisher, fastest female finisher, fastest team and so forth, but Hughes said the run is about more than the prizes.

“It’s something people can come to and enjoy,” he said. “Sometimes people come out in costume … but it’s more than about just having fun.”

As of Sept. 6, between seven and eight children are signed up to be recipients. Raised funds will go to medical expenses for the selected kids. Anyone who wishes to suggest a child for the charity is requested to email his or her story to charity@dixiemudrun.com. The amount of children who may be helped will be proportionate to how many people show up for the race.

“We’re compiling as many people as possible,” Hughes said. “How many people we get determines how many kids we can help.”

So far, about 100 people have signed up for the mud run, though Hughes said he expects more people to join the race as Oct. 13 draws closer.

“The goal is 1,000 (people) minimum,” he said.

Aside from the main event, there will also be a “kid’s race” for ages 5 to 13. It will be a half-mile long and include obstacles similar to the main course.

For individuals who don’t want to get muddy, volunteer opportunities are available. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the website for more information.

Registration is currently open for solo runners and teams.  “The sooner you sign up, the more you’ll save (on registration),” Hughes said.

“This isn’t boot camp,” Hughes added. “Nobody smiles all the way through boot camp. Come out, get dirty, and have fun.”
