ST. GEORGE – Jared Edwards pounded the ball for 167 yards and four touchdowns as the Hurricane Tigers beat up on 5A West Jordan 28-14 Friday night.

Edwards, who had a quiet opening week against Skyline, burst into the spotlight with the four-score day.

“They wanted to take away the outside stuff today, so there was a bit more room inside,” Hurricane coach Chris Homer said. “Jared had a big day. We made some steps forward and in the right direction.”

The Tigers, 2-0, took advantage of a Jaguars team that was missing its starting quarterback in Michael Moorehead and also its top receiver. The West Jordan defense was no match for the Tigers up front.

“We were very physical,” Homer said. “This was a big win against a solid opponent, even though they had a couple of their guys out.”

Homer pointed to the play of Cody Engstrom on defense as an indication of his team’s effort.

“Cody made some big plays,” Homer said. “He was in on a lot of tackles.”

Hurricane actually dominated the game in many respects and led 21-0. The Tigers had a 17-play drive in the third quarter.

“We love those kinds of drives,” Homer said. “We did have a couple of fumbles, which is different for us. We don’t like those. They kind of kept West Jordan in the game. But all-in-all, it was a solid effort by the team. Very efficient.”

Hurricane out-gained the Jaguars by nearly 100 yards (348-250). Edwards had scored on twin runs of 1 yard each in the first and second quarter. The long drive in the third quarter was capped by a 7-yarder by Edwards.

West Jordan got on the scoreboard late in the third on a run by Chinedu Ahanonu of 57 yards. But the Tigers iced the game by chewing up another five minutes, with Edwards scoring from 17 yards out to make it 28-7 with 10 minutes left.

WJ cut it to 28-14 with under two minutes to play, but by then Hurricane was off to another victory.
