New fire near Central, West Mountain Fire 85 percent contained

SOUTHERN UTAH –Lighting near Central has ignited a new blaze currently 51 acres in size, while the 2,450-acre West Mountain Fire has breached 85 percent containment.

Atchinson Fire

The Atchinson Fire started Tuesday evening and is located two miles east of Central. Hotspots are visible from the surrounding areas and possibly state Route 18.

Firefighters are working with a Type III Helicopter to keep the fire in check until ground crews are able to secure the fire’s perimeter.

No structures are threatened and no closures are currently in place.

The fire is at 0 percent containment thus far.

Fire crew resources include five fire engines, two hand crews, two squads, one air attack platform, one Type III helicopter and various overhead. Up to 85 people are currently assigned to the blaze.

West Mountain Fire

Existing, unsecured fire line is located in steep and rocky terrain.  Firefighters are working to access the remaining fire perimeter to meet full containment objectives.

No structures are threatened and no closures are currently in place.

Recourses on the fire have reduced to one hand crew, two squads, one air attack platform and various overhead. Approximately 35 people are still assigned to the fire.
