ST. GEORGE - The official dates when high school athletic competition can begin have been released by the Utah High School Activities Association.

Wednesday (Aug. 8) is the first day the UHSAA has deemed eligible for competition in boys golf, cross country, girls soccer and girls tennis.

Girls volleyball teams can begin competitive play Aug. 14.

The first week of football, which features teams playing “Endowment” games, is Aug. 17. The Endowment games were added years ago so that teams can play a 10th contest in their prep football schedule if they so choose. Half of the gate receipts (ticket sales) for the preseason game are given to the UHSAA as a fundraiser for the organization. All seven Region 9 football teams will compete in Endowment games this season.
