ST. GEORGE – The Snow Canyon Warriors lost their appeal and will have to forfeit four games. The Warriors tried to have their four wins overturned.
Last week the Utah High School Athletic Association (UHSAA) declared Snow Canyon catcher Gabe Chavira ineligible, and any games he had played in the Warriors had to forfeit.
Principal Warren Brooks said, ”we wanted to appeal because this is an administrative mistake and we don’t feel this should be taken out on the boys.” He said, “I was willing to take more action on the administration if it would help the boys.”
The school confirmed that Athletic Director Conley Gali was on administrative leave.
According to the UHSAA, every transfer (that plays sports) has to fill out a waiver.
All four of the wins the Warriors had to give up were shutouts: A 3-0 win over Canyon View on March 27, a 11-0 win over Dixie on March 30, an April 3 win over Hurricane 10-0, an April 5 win over Cedar 10-0.
The Warriors are now in fifth place with one game to go and only the top four teams make it to the state playoffs.
One thing that did fall the Warriors’ way is that they play the fourth-place team on Friday, the last game of the regular season. Desert Hills is the fourth place team and the Warriors must beat them twice.
If the Warriors finally win the regular season on Friday, they must beat Desert Hills again the next day. The game will be a play-in game so it will be held at a neutral site (Dixie High School).
