TOQUERVILLE – The fire that started Tuesday morning continues the burn into the evening as multiple firefighting agencies battle the blaze.
Located northeast of Toquerville and off Highway 17, the fire began at 11 a.m. Tuesday and has grown to encompass an estimated 500 acres. According to a statement from Nick Howell, Fire Information Officer for the Color Country Interagency Fire Response team, the fire was the result of someone burning debris.
No structures are currently threatened by the fire, and no roads have been closed. Two firefighters were injured, though the injuries were not life threatening.
Agencies involved include Hurricane, Leeds, Washington, St. George, and Hildale Fire Departments; Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Forestry, State of Utah Forestry Fire and State Lands, and the U.S. Forest Service.
“Firefighters are making good progress on the accessible portions of the fire perimeter,” Howell said.
An estimated time of containment of the fire has yet to be announced.
