ST. GEORGE – Multiple agencies in the St. George area came together Saturday morning to assist an 11-year-old-boy who had fallen into a crevice in Paradise Canyon.
Battalion Chief Ken Guard of the St. George Fire Department said the 11-year-old boy had been hiking along the Red Cliffs trailhead when he fell into a 20-to-30 foot deep crevice and sustained injuries to his arms and shoulders.
Emergency personnel were alerted the incident at 9 a.m.
After arriving at the scene and assessing the situation the Washington County Sheriff Search and Rescue team was called and dispatched to the area to help remove the boy from the crevice, Guard said.
Members of the Search and Rescue team, plus equipment, were flown to the scene by IHC Life Flight. The only other way to reach the location was to trek the three miles up the trail, Guard added.
The boy was safely removed from the crevice and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, and was flown to Dixie Regional Medical Center for treatment and observation.
Guard said up to 25 people from the St. George Fire Department, Dixie Ambulance, Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, and Life Flight were involved in the incident which lasted around three hours.
