ST. GEORGE – After a perfect Thursday for Region 9, the region will get its first loss of the State Tournament tonight because the two games have two Region 9 teams going head-to-head.

In semifinal number one at 7:30 p.m., the No. 1 ranked Desert Hills Thunder take on the No. 4 seed Dixie Flyers. The Thunder went 2-0 against the Flyers this season but the Flyers are playing their best basketball of the season right now.

Semifinal number two will have the No. 2 seed Hurricane Tigers against the No. 3 seed Cedar Redmen. The Tigers and Redmen split their regular season matchups, and finished the regular season tied for second place; but the Tigers won the coin flip and got the second seed in the state tournament.

The talk all year from the Northern Utah media was that Region 9 was full of hype and would not deliver. Boy did Region 9 deliver: Starting the state tournament there were 16 teams, four from each region, Regions 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The great news is we can guarantee the 3A state champion will come from Region 9 – now we have to find out from where.
