DSC Symphony Band and Symphony Orchestra open 2012 Performance Series

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College’s Performance and Fine Arts Series opens its 2012 mid-winter performance schedule with the DSC Symphony Band in concert on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, and the Dixie State Symphony Orchestra, on Saturday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium on the DSC campus.

The DSC Symphony Band is under the direction of long-time conductor Gary Caldwell, who is in his 33rdyear as director of bands at DSC.

The symphony band will perform nine stirring compositions, beginning with the Robert Sheldon composition entitled “Rhapsodic Celebration,” which features three brief connected musical tableaus, “Intrada,” “Serenade,” and “Galop,” that present their own distinct mood and style. The Band will also perform “Festival” by James Clifton Williams, Jr., the Scottish Highlands-inspired “Walking Tune” by Percy Grainger, the Jim Colonna composition “Dancing Day,” and Rossano Galante’s “The Redwoods.”

The band will also perform the old English folk song “O Waly, Waly” by Jay Bocook, the John Mackey piece “Hymn to a Blue Hour,” the Noah Taylor composition “Condition Red,” and the ensemble will conclude the performance with the David R. Gillingham arrangement, “Council Oak,” which was inspired by the significance of a grand oak tree which chronicles the history of the Seminoles on the Seminole Hollywood Reservation in Florida.

The Dixie State Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Paul Abegg, will be joined on stage by French violinist Frédéric Moreau, who will accompany the orchestra in a performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto” and harpist Adriana Horn from the Dixie State Music Faculty in the performance of “Adagietto” by Gustav Mahler.

The symphony will also perform the overture from “Russlan and Ludmilla” and “Sibelius Symphony No. 2.”
