Habitat for Humanity announces Martin Luther King Day of Service

ST. GEORGE – In honor of the Martin Luther King Day of Service – Monday, Jan. 16 –  Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s A Brush with Kindness committee in partnership with the Volunteer Center of Washington County will be tackling five service projects on five different homes throughout Washington County.

A Brush with Kindness cleans up yards, does minor exterior repairs, and home restoration for low income or elderly people who are struggling to maintain their home’s appearance. In the year since its inception, A Brush with Kindness volunteers have completed 14 projects in our community. Anyone interested in participating in these projects should call our office (435-674-7669) or email [email protected].

Below is a brief description of the projects.

Project A: We will begin on the house in St George at 11am. When the project is complete, we will move on to the house in LaVerkin. We will expect to work until dark or until the project is complete. Beverages, snacks, and lunch will be provided. Volunteers should bring work gloves, construction tools, and ladders. Roofing experience is desirable.

Project A properties:

2271 East 550 North, St George: repair and re-install metal awning, repair light fixture

164 West 200 South, LaVerkin: minor roof repair

Project B: Habitat will provide rides for up to 14 people from St George to the two sites for Project B. Those interested in riding can meet at Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore (267 East 1400 South, in St George) at 9:15am. Mike Gburski will drive the group. We will begin work at the home in Hurricane at 10am. Depending on the number of volunteers we have, we will split into two groups and start on the house in LaVerkin as soon as possible, but no later than 1pm.

It is likely that these two projects will overlap. We will expect to work until dark. Beverages, snacks, and lunch will be provided. Volunteers should bring work gloves, landscaping tools, paint clothes, sanding tools, construction tools, chainsaws, and ladders. A trailer to haul away refuse would be fantastic! Landscaping experience is highly desirable.

Project B properties:

49 North 3880 West, Hurricane: trim oleanders/cactus, minor fence repair, paint fence, re-install fence gate and yard clean up.

54 N 110 E, LaVerkin: cut down 2 trees (chainsaw needed), trim shrubbery and yard clean up.

Project C: Project C will begin at 11am. Volunteers, tools and materials are already confirmed for this project. Beverages, snacks, and lunch will be provided.

Project C property: 1048 Loblolly Circle, St George: build accessible ramp at home.
