It’s official: Hughes wins

ST. GEORGE – A week after the Nov. 8 elections for city council, Jimmie Hughes’ potential victory over Gloria Shakespeare has been officially declared with a 111-vote lead.

Hughes takes the third and final seat for St. George City Council along with Jon Pike and Gil Almquist. They will each serve for a period four years.

Hughes’ victory seemingly came out of nowhere on the night of Nov. 8 when he trailed behind Ed Baca and Shakespeare. In the end, he had come out ahead of both candidates and held a tentative lead for third position behind Pike and Almquist.

In an interview with St. George News the day after the election, Hughes said that as a new city councilor, he would be “open and accessible” to the people of the St. George. He would also see to the responsible spending of taxpayer money.  Getting the city government to “stay out of peoples’ backyards” was also a goal pertaining to city code reform. (See previous story)
