Dixie State College Pageant crowns Homecoming Queen with other awards

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College senior Hayley Weaver was crowned as the 2011 Miss Dixie Homecoming Queen in front of a capacity crowd last night at DSC Avenna Center Cox Auditorium.

The pageant was held as part of the College’s Annual Homecoming Week festivities, which continue through Saturday, Oct. 22.

Weaver, an integrated studies major from Vancouver, Wash., won a full-tuition scholarship and an opportunity to represent DSC and compete at the 2012 Miss Utah Pageant next June, giving her a chance to advance to the 2013 Miss America Pageant.

Weaver, who performed a vocal solo of the Adele hit song “Someone Like You” during the talent portion of the competition, promoted her platform “Music Instruction in Early Childhood Development and Primary Education.”

Pageant hopefuls were judged in physical fitness/swimwear, eveningwear and talent areas of the competition, along with the customary onstage question and personal interview portions of the event.

Rounding out the 2011 DSC Homecoming Royalty are: First attendant Kylee Morrison, a freshman communication major from Oakley, Idaho; second attendant Sunny Christensen, a freshman marketing major from Salem, Nev; third attendant Carlie Brotherson, a sophomore nursing major from Mount Pleasant, Utah; and fourth attendant Jaycee Jolley, a freshman general education major from Ivins, Utah.

Four additional awards were presented at the evening’s pageant, including: The Director’s Award, won by Alissa Curto, a freshman communication major from Mesquite, Nev; the Best Essay Award, given to Kassie Gillette, sophomore communication major from Las Vegas, Nev; Miss Photogenic honors to Breanna Opdahl, a freshman general education major from Wahpeton, N.D; and Miss Dixie Spirit name awarded Cree Hotch, a freshman general education major from Ketchikan, Ala.
