Around the Country
Friday night the Arizona State Sun Devils showed off their speed, in a very entertaining game, as they upset the 21st ranked Missouri Tigers in overtime 30-37.

Auburn, who had dropped out of the rankings after barely defeating Utah State last weekend, upset 16th ranked Mississippi State 34-41 at home and have earned their way back into the rankings this week.

The Michigan Wolverines trailed 24-7 after the end of the third quarter, but made an amazing comeback scoring their third touchdown in the fourth quarter with only 1:12 left in the game to take the lead 28-24. Notre Dame showed they wouldn’t just lay down and die when they scored another touchdown covering 61 yards in four plays during a span of 42 seconds to take the lead back 28-31 with just 30 seconds left in the game, but Michigan pulled off the impossible as they drove 80 yards in 30 seconds capped with the game winning 16 yard touchdown pass from Denard Robinson to Roy Roundtree to upset the Fighting Irish 31-35.

BYU
BYU traveled to Austin, Texas to take on the traditional powerhouse Texas Longhorns. BYU’s defense came out hard and strong in the first half. They made it appear early that Texas didn’t have a chance, but they didn’t do as well in the second half and two games into the season BYU’s traditional high powered offense is still missing in action having scored only one touchdown in each of their two games. In the end, despite letting off a little, BYU’s defense kept it close, but just couldn’t do enough as the Cougars fell to the Longhorns 16-17. http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2011/09/11/byu-lacks-offense-winner-determined-by-one-point/ Next week is the big game, frequently called the Holy War. The Cougars will host the Utah Utes next Saturday.

Dixie St.
Saturday evening the Dixie St. Red Storm hosted the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The Red Storm started the game strong and took a 10-22 lead into halftime. In the third quarter the game got closer as both offenses scored a touchdown, but the Maverick defense also scored a touchdown off an interception. After three quarters the Red Storm still lead 24-30, but something happened in the fourth quarter. Not only was the Red Storm unable to score a single point, but they also threw four interceptions. Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns and one set up the offense for another touchdown. Dixie St lost the game by a score of 52-30. http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2011/09/11/mavericks-score-42-in-second-half-cruise-past-red-storm-52-30/ Next week the Red Storm can take a fresh start as they begin conference play in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, at home, against Simon Fraser University.

SUU
The Thunderbirds hosted the 12th ranked Sacramento State Hornets Saturday afternoon and SUU’s quarterback Brad Sorensen brought his “A” game. Sorensen showed off his accuracy as he completed 81 percent of his passes going 30-37. He was also aided by SUU’s two running backs as Austin Minefee returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and Deckar Alexander capped off two drives with touchdowns. The T-birds got behind early as the Hornets scored the first touchdown and went up 7-0, but they played well in the first half, taking a 14-20 lead into half time. In the second half the T-birds took control of the game. They prevented the Hornets from scoring a single point and upset the 12th ranked Hornets 14-35. http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2011/09/11/sorensen-puts-on-a-show-as-the-t-birds-defeat-no-12-sacramento-state/ Next Saturday SUU will host Texas-San Antonio in Cedar City.

Utah
On Saturday the Utah Utes traveled to Los Angeles to play their first conference game in the Coliseum against PAC-12 powerhouse USC. USC took control early as they kicked in a 47 yard field goal and took advantage of a short field, that was created when John White IV fumbled the ball, by scoring a touchdown to take a 0-10 lead in the first quarter. Utah stayed in contention as Jordan Wynn, who completed 50 percent of his passes going 23-46 for 238 yards, completed a 10 yard pass to DeVonte Christopher for a touchdown to bring them within three points at halftime. Early in the third quarter USC finished an 88 yard drive with a nine yard touchdown pass from Matt Barkley to Xavier Grimble to extend the lead to 7-17.

The Ute defense helped out as Brian Blechen forced a fumble and Conroy Black recovered it to give the Utes the ball on their own 48 yard line. Reggie Dunn made a nice 51 yard run on the very next play to set up White for the one yard touchdown run that brought the game to within three late in the third quarter.

Both defenses controlled the game the rest of the way. On the last drive of the game, Utah was able to move the ball 28 yards and was handed 15 more yards off a penalty to set up a game tying 41 yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the game, but the kick was blocked by Matt Kalil and Torin Harris returned it for a touchdown that was taken back by the officials on an unsportsmanlike penlty. The touchdown was reinstated hours after the game was over by PAC-12 officials. The Utes are now preparing themselves to play their arch-rivals in Provo on Saturday.
