CEDAR CITY – Cedar City Police responded to a report of an auto accident involving two vehicles that resulted in the death of an elderly passenger. Four additional occupants from the involved vehicles were transported to Valley View Medical Center for their injuries.
Shortly after 2 p.m., area law enforcement officers responded to reports of a vehicle accident at the intersection of Cross Hollow Drive and S. Main Street in Cedar City. Upon arrival, officers discovered an accident involving 10 occupants from two vehicles; a family of seven from New Harmony and three occupants in a minivan from Parowan.
Witnesses assisted in extricating and stabilizing the accident victims until emergency personnel arrived.
Donald McCulley, a 74-year-old occupant of the minivan died at Valley View Medical Center from injuries suffered in the accident. Parowan residents, Kathleen Drake, 50, and Marion McCulley, 72, were both occupants in the minivan and were also transported to VVMC for their injuries
Mindy Hughes, 40, and another 7-year-old female were among the occupants in the SUV and were likewise transported to VVMC for their injuries.
The medical conditions of all surviving accident victims is currently unknown.
Evidence collected at the scene, coupled with statements made by witnesses, show the SUV was traveling south on Main Street to enter I-15 when the driver of the minivan attempted to make a left turn in front of the SUV. The van was struck broadside by the SUV during this turn.
This is the second fatal accident in Cedar City since July 2011. The Cedar City Police Department will continue to investigate the contributing circumstances leading to the deadly accident to avoid similar accidents in the future.
