ST. GEORGE – The 2011 Rocky Mountain Football League Championship game was played between the Dixie Rebels and the Wasatch REVolution at Walt Brooks Stadium on Saturday, July 9. The Rebels received the trophy for the second straight year, defeating the REVolution 41-18, and going completely undefeated during the 2011 campaign.
REVolution did a better job in the championship game then the previous match with the Rebels, at running the ball and protecting their quarterback; however, that wasn’t enough to defeat the Rebels.
After a pretty uneventful first quarter, there was some excitement early in the second quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, Rebel’s quarterback, Diarra Fields, threw an amazing 46-yard pass to Skyler Ence for a touchdown.
After the extra point, Ryan Lang returned the kickoff, from the end zone, for a touchdown. Ryan Chase caught some air and blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the Rebels with a 7-6 lead.
Steve Pulver helped the Rebels add another 10 points that quarter by knocking in a 47-yard field goal and setting up Fields for a touchdown by grabbing an interception and running it back to the 1 yard line.
With the Rebels scoring another 17 points in the 3rd quarter to make it 34-6, the REVolution were forced to go away from the running game in the forth in a last ditch effort to make a comeback. They were only partially successful, but it was too little too late as the Rebels easily pulled off the victory.
Having gone completely undefeated to get their second championship, the Rebels have to be seen as more than just the favorites to win again next year. They beat the second best team in the league by 20 and 23 points, which have brought up the possibility of a dynasty looming in the RMFL.
