ST. GEORGE – The Rocky Mountain Football League is looking to crown a new champion on Saturday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at Dixie High School’s Walt Brooks Stadium. Two teams are vying for the championship: Wasatch Revolution and St. George’s own defending champions, the Dixie Rebels.
The game will be a rematch of the last game of the regular season, on June 11, when both teams were undefeated at 7-0. Stakes were high as the winner would be granted home field advantage throughout the forthcoming playoffs. With Dixie having the top defense and the No. 2 offense in the league, and Wasatch having the top offense and the No. 2 defense, it was sure to be an exciting, enlightening match.
While the game was enlightening, the outcome was not what most had expected. The Rebels took a significant lead of 16-3 into the half, and won the game with a final score of 37-17.
The Rebels would love nothing more than to win their second straight championship, while the Revolution will be vying to avenge the only loss of their season. The Rebels won last year under the name the St. George Blitz.
The key to the Rebel’s victory, almost a month ago, was their ability to put an extreme amount of pressure on Revolution quarterback Charlie Peterson, formerly of BYU. Peterson had been sacked only six times all season coming into the game, but the Rebels were consistently able to get into the backfield where they contested passes, resulting in four interceptions, and sacked Peterson an astounding six times for a total loss of 46 yards.
Being the prolific passer that he is, Peterson was able to do a lot of damage in spite of all the pressure he had to deal with. He threw for an incredible 330 yards while being forced to scramble constantly.
The sacks and interceptions were just what the doctor ordered to overcome the Revolution despite their ability to garner more total offensive action with 350 yards vs. the Rebels 265 yards.
With the 4th of July weekend off, the Revolution are surely going to be focused on patching up the holes in their offensive line before Saturday’s game. If the Rebels are able to keep Peterson on his toes again, the Rebels are likely to bring home back to back Rocky Mountain Football League Championships.
