HURRICANE – The City of Hurricane is sponsoring a concert by the Hurricane Valley Choir to honor our area military veterans on Armed Forces Day, May 21st at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be held in the Auditorium of the Hurricane City Fine Arts Building located at 92S and 100W in downtown Hurricane. Everyone is invited to attend this great opportunity to recognize our area veterans and to celebrate our country with beautiful music. Admission is free.
The Sterling Russell American Legion Post 100 will begin the program with the presentation of the flags and The Pledge of Allegiance. Two members, Zaylee Ford and Karley Garrett, of the newly formed Hurricane performing team “The Force” will sing the National Anthem.
The Hurricane Valley Choir will perform a variety of patriotic music in addition to favorite American folk songs and spirituals. Among the selections will be: Battle Hymn of the Republic by Peter Wilhousky, An American Song Book by Doug Wagner, A Tribute to the Armed Services by Lloyd Larson, Ain’a That Good News by William Dawson and Freedom Struggle arranged by choir member Ron Taylor. Dance instructors from the Hurricane City Center, Emily Gardiner and Shellie Thomas, will perform a dance selection to Leann Rimes’ version of God Bless America. Warren Larson is the director of the Hurricane Valley Choir and Camille McCausland is the accompanist.
The featured work will be the performance of 2 movements of Randall Thompson’s The Testament to Freedom. This work was composed in honor of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson. The texts are from the writings of Thomas Jefferson. The first performance of The Testament of Freedom was on Founder’s Day, April 13, 1943 and the performance was broadcast nation-wide and rebroadcast by the Office of War Information to the Armed Forces overseas. The Boston Symphony Orchestra had scheduled a performance of the work in 1945 when word that President Roosevelt had died. Instead of calling off the concert, the performance went on and was open to the public free of charge. Accompanying the choir will be Camille McCausland on piano; Lauressa Hunt, flute; Rhonda Rhodes, Oboe/Eng. Horn; Carolyn Ferrin and Ann Hogan, violins; Robin Keith, cello and Reuel Hopkins, trumpet.
