WASHINGTON D.C. – Gray Wolves were removed from the endangered species list yesterday in the majority of the Rocky Mountain Region.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said in a press release that he was pleased with the Department of Interior’s decision to move forward with the delisting and allow states to manage control of the animals. However, not all of Utah was included in the delisting. Hatch said critical areas of Utah were not included.
“The Utah DWR has found wolves in areas of Eastern Utah that are not included in the areas that the Department of Interior has selected in Utah allowing state management of wolf populations will be limited to the extreme northern portion of the State,” according to the press release.
According to Discovery News, the state of Wyoming was also not included in the decision. Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington were included in the delisting, and hunting may resume according to the state’s management plans.
This is the first time Congress has ever removed an animal from the endangered species list.
