ST. GEORGE – Rumors have been circulating that certain functions of publication for The Spectrum news service in St. George are being outsourced from St. George in May of this year.

St. George News has addressed these rumors both with Gannett Co., Inc., the parent company of The Spectrum, Gannett’s Vice President of Communications, and its Legal Department for Shareholder Services, both of whom deferred to the principals of the Spectrum.  The Spectrum, locally and directly, spoke directly to the issues.

Gannett is consolidating a great amount of services, advertising and printing.

Donnie Welch, President and Publisher of The Spectrum, dispels the characterization of outsourcing, clarifying that the paper is “consolidating its art department and ad building” to regional centers of Gannett.

Welch indicates Gannett has these regional locations, hubs he called them, including Phoenix, Des Moines and Louisville.  He was uncertain which of these “hubs”  The Spectrum’s ad building and artwork will go to in May.

A few jobs may be lost,  “a few tops,” Welch acknowledges.  But he emphasizes his expectation that these changes will not have a significant impact.

Shifting talent to centralized locations, great artists, people strong in digitalizing graphics, these are the goals of The Spectrum (vis-à-vis Gannett) in centralizing certain publication functions.  It may result in job transfers if not job losses.
