SANTA CLARA – Snow Canyon High School baseball created excitement during the first part of the season, but the key for the team is to continue the momentum.

During batting practice on Wednesday, April 6, one Warrior hitter successfully executed a sacrifice bunt. The ball softly clanked off the aluminum bat and rolled down the first-base line. The players watched with excitement as the ball gradually decelerated to a stall. The ball hugged the white line in the dirt, but it never went foul.

Good luck? Maybe, but with or without luck Snow Canyon has jumped out to a 15-1 record this baseball season.

“We’ve got 20 good kids that get along real well,” Snow Canyon coach Reed Secrist said. “They seem to stick together through everything. The chemistry here has just been huge.”

That was the general consensus among the players. As the players set up the batting cage they were all comfortable with one another and joked around together.

“The key has been basically having confidence in each other,” said Austin Ovard, Snow Canyon’s junior pitcher. “We all know each other and what we’re capable of.”

Senior right fielder Reggie Gates also said the ability of the team to play together has been key in the team’s success this season.

“We mesh really good together,” Gates said. “When someone’s down someone else from the back of the lineup picks them up.”

The Warriors will need that team chemistry as they head into the thick of region play. Even though they’ve played well, they know they still have aspects of their game to improve upon.

“We’ve got four Region games under our belt, and we’ve given up runs in the first inning of each of those games,” Secrist said. “We’ve got to make sure we’re ready to play come first inning. We can’t make the little errors. We can’t give teams runs because that comes back to haunt you.”

Ovard and Gates both said the fundamentals are what will be important going forward. Ovard said the focus should be on defense, and Gates said the team needs to be smart.

Be sure to head out to Desert Hills High School on Friday at 7 p.m. to see the streaking Warriors take on the Desert Hills Thunder. Snow Canyon is coming off a come-from-behind win against Cedar High School, winning the game 9-5. Desert Hills is looking to snap out of a funk. The Thunder have lost four games in a row.
