Hatch’s Christmas message to Utahns

Salt Lake City, UTAH – Sen. Orrin Hatch’s Christmas message to Utahns follows:

During the past several weeks as we have addressed issues vitally important to the future of our nation, the “spirit of Christmas” has never felt more welcomed. The holidays seem to bring a renewed sense of peace and friendship that is embraced by all eager for the goodness this season brings.

No matter one’s beliefs, traditions or customs – the holiday season is not necessarily just a date, but a state of mind. It is when thoughts turn toward home, to our neighborhoods, and to children.  And for me the holidays always represent a time for thankfulness for the people who have impacted our lives in so many ways.

I can’t help but reflect during this time of giving on the service so many brave soldiers are rendering near and far for our freedom.  There is no greater honor and privilege I have as a Senator than to meet with brave Utahns who choose to put on the uniform of our country and defend our freedoms.  The men and women of our armed forces inspire me greatly with their willingness to sacrifice and incredible spirit to help their fellow men and women.

It is not just brave soldiers who are busy in service to others, but each and every day I am touched by people who selflessly give to their families, their neighborhoods, and their country. Their gifts are not necessarily material, but ones of love and service.  Whether it is the young mother who takes time out of her busy schedule to help serve meals at the soup kitchen, or teachers who go the extra mile to see a struggling child finally capture the light of learning – each of us are blessed by the service and love given by others.

A wise man once told me that it is not necessarily the “presents” we give to others, it is the gift of our “presence,” that touches lives and changes hearts.  So amidst the hustle and bustle, the green and the red, my fondest wish for all would be that we find some time to reflect on the spirit of this wonderful season, and give thanks for those who share personal gifts of love and service with others in all corners of our beautiful land.

Elaine and I hope all will find peace and joy this holiday season.

Merry Christmas!

            Senator Orrin Hatch
