Pulsipher: Sheriff’s Office needs to be more involved in the community

WASHINGTON COUNTY – As the newly elected Sheriff, Cory Pulsipher is ready to make changes at the Sheriff’s Office and get more involved with the community.

“We’ve got a lot of things we’re doing right that we’re going to keep doing,” he said. “And a lot of things we’re going to change.”

Pulsipher has been with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department for 24 years but spent the last eight years working mostly in administration. He said he has noticed the department hasn’t been as involved with the community for the last two years. He plans to change that by having the department attend more community events and be more noticeable in the public.

“The Sheriff’s office needs to be involved so they actually know what the needs of the people are,” he said.

Pulsipher said the County is struggling with drug and gang problems, and he wants to curb that criminal element from continuing to infiltrate the community.

“(That criminal element) is coming into our community more and more and we need to focus on that,” he said. “As the community continues to grow and people move in, those elements come with it. We enjoy certain qualities of life and the freedoms that come with it. We lose those freedoms when the criminal element comes in. We need to make St. George and Washington County a great place to come to.”

Pulsipher said he will continue to be involved with Search and Rescue, which he said doesn’t feel like a job because he enjoys working with the volunteers and “getting out of the office.”

“We’ve got some of the best volunteers in the world,” he said.

Pulsipher said he will try to maintain the good things already being done at the Sheriff’s office, and improve in areas where they are lacking.

“We’ve done a lot of good things, now it’s my job to try and improve on it the best I can,” he said.
