Youth put to the test

WASHINGTON – They have probably never stepped foot in a city hall before, but that’ s exactly where the leadership skills of 15 youth from Pine View High School, Desert Hills High School and Millcreek High School will be put to the test serving on the new Washington City Youth Council.

On Oct. 13, local youth were sworn in and introduced publicly for the first time at the regular Washington City Council meeting. Youth Council members include
Pine View High School: Yennhi Duong, Katie Legg, Zachary Lusk, Hunter Schone, Natalee Scorsby, Alyssa Turek, Ashton Turek, Justyn Zook and Gabriela Zumaeta; Desert Hills High School: Jordan McGinnis, Victoria Larkin, Aaron Holden and Brooklyn Clayton; and Millcreek High School: Teuaililo Alafov Faapuna and Stephen Nielsen. The advisor is Carmen Iverson Snow.

The Mayor and City Council created the WCYC in hopes of providing opportunities for local youth to get involved with city government.

Washington City is focused on engaging individuals and families in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The city wants to invest in the future of our youth and allow students who serve on the council to provide feedback and recommendations regarding public policies and programs.

The WCYC will take an active leadership role in creating change. This youth council offers teen participants a venue to gain leadership skills, strengthen their ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively, and learn fellowship by working together with peers from diverse backgrounds.

Students will have a chance on Oct. 27, to lobby for various positions including Mayor, City Manager, City Planner, Recorder and others. Youth Council members must be a resident of Washington City to serve on the Executive Board.

Some of the events and city projects they will be involved with this year include the Washington City Night, Christmas in Dixie, Cotton Days, and Dogtown Half Marathon, just to name a few. The WCYC will conduct two public hearings each year on issues of importance to youth. They will also provide an annual report to the Mayor & Washington City Council.

The council will meet bi-monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. All meetings will be conducted at the Washington City Hall in the Council Chambers. For more information on this youth council, call 656-6353 or visit www.washingtoncity.org
