DSC Symphony Band to make debut concert

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State College Symphony Band will makes its 2010-11 season debut with its annual Fall Concert this Friday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSC campus.

The 74-piece symphony band is under the direction of longtime conductor Gary Caldwell, who is entering his 32 year as director of bands at DSC. The symphony band will perform eight stirring compositions, beginning the David Shaffer Mediterranean-inspried “Costa del Sol,” and the “Procession of the Sorcerers,” a composition by Robert Buckley which will take the audience’s imagination into a colorful world of magical and mythical characters and creatures.

The band will also perform the Mark Camphouse piece “Heartland Sketches,” which includes fragments of the University of Iowa fight song and Alma Mater Iowa, that is sure to pull at the heartstrings of any Hawkeye fan, along with the Samuel Barber classic “Commando March,” which Barber penned just after enlisting in the United States Army in 1943. In addition, the audience will enjoy a piece of Americana, starting with Claire Grundman’s “American Folk Rhapsody No. 3,” and the Gary Gilroy composition “Four Dance Episodes for Band.”

The symphony band will conclude the evening with a pair of Old Testament-inspired pieces, beginning with “Echoes of Egypt,” which features five short musical vignettes composed by Nicholas Baratta, and “Abram’s Pursuit,” inspired by the fourteenth chapter of Genesis as told in the music of David R. Holsinger, will serve as the concert’s grand finale.

The DSC Symphony Band will perform twice this semester, including the ensemble’s annual Christmas concert Nov. 30. The Symphony Band will also perform a pair of concerts during the spring semester on Feb. 22, and April 19.

All remaining concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., in the Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. General admission tickets for each concert will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $1 for DSC students and faculty and staff with current ID.

For the third-straight season, Dixie State is offering a DSC Fine Arts Season Pass (excluding dance performances), giving patrons access to all DSC theatre productions, along with all instrumental and vocal concerts, for the 2010-11 season. The DSC Fine Arts Season Pass is available for $99 per patron, an $85 savings over the regular box office single-event ticket price. In addition, a season Music-Only pass may be purchased for $85, a savings of $65 over the regular box office single-event ticket price.
