ZION GEOLOGY

Look into the past of Zion, where rivers meet oceans, volcanoes erupt ash onto forests where dinosaurs live, and where deserts rival the Sahara. Short hikes will lead to an understanding of the geologic foundation of Zion. We'll focus on exploring the continual cutting and shaping of the canyon. A look at landslides and rock falls that still occur in the park will give a sense of the ever-changing landscape. Don't miss this opportunity to gain an in-depth appreciation of Zion's "rock" past. Plein Air Art Event-Zion National Park

The Zion National Park Foundation will host the Sixth Annual Zion National Park Plein Air Art Invitational, November 3-9, 2014. The event celebrates the role art has played in the creation and history of the park by hosting 24 of the countrys finest landscape artists for a week of painting and teaching in the park. The artists will paint plein air (on location) throughout the week in many of the same locations that iconic artists such as Thomas Moran painted when this landscape was first exposed to the American public. Park visitors during the week will have many unique opportunities to witness great artists at work, as well as attend daily painting demonstrations and lectures. On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, the Zion Nature Center will be transformed into an art gallery as more than 150 paintings produced during the week are hung for public exhibit and sale. On Saturday, an exciting Paint Out event will be held on the lawn in front of the Zion Lodge, beneath Zion Canyons towers of stone. During the Paint Out visitors can purchase the amazing paintings produced by the invitational artists as they are being painted. Event proceeds go to the Zion National Park Foundation to support important projects in the park, including the successful Zion Youth Education Initiative, making it possible for children from as far away as Las Vegas to visit the park and have a potentially life-changing educational experience.

Perfection

For Immediate Release What’s HAPPENING At DSU Theatre! Perfection, A Devised Piece DSU Theatre invites you to experience a once in a lifetime performance! Produced and directed by DSU theatre students and advised by Michael Harding, this play is sure to move you. The show plays November 6-8, and 11-15 in the Eccles Fine Arts Center Black Box. This play is rated PG-13. In the standard theatre model, a single playwright writes the text and then a director casts actors and selects designers to interpret that text, resulting in a traditional theatre production. With devised theatre, however, the collective artists begin without a script. They might even decide to liberate themselves by surrendering their traditional, specialized theatrical roles of actors, designers, playwrights, or directors and start as theatre generalists (or cross-trainers) with an idea, a hunch, that takes them into a studio space to investigate collaboratively – to unpack that hunch. A devised piece of theatre can literally start with anything: a painting, a song, a real-life event, or a novel to adapt. DSU Student Sean Bronsema, one of the collaborators of the piece, says, “I’m excited for the creativity... We are molding something out of nothing. Pure creativity is the material.” In this particular devised piece, the theme can be narrowed down to a single word: Perfection. What is perfection? What is our view of it? Are we ever truly capable of achieving it? These are all questions that audience members will ponder as they watch this production. The students are very excited to be working on this piece. Michael Harding, faculty advisor for the piece says, “My biggest worry was that the students wouldn’t take full advantage of it. The students have made that fear quickly fade.” The piece will truly touch everyone who comes to see it. Don’t miss out on an original piece of theatre that will keep you coming back! You will never see the same performance twice. The play is sure to leave you in awe. $10 General Admission, $5 for all WSCD High school students and employees, $5 tickets for groups of 15+. All productions start promptly at 7:30 pm (house opens at 7 pm) in the Black Box and Main Stage Theatres located in the Eccles Fine Art Center on the Dixie State University campus in downtown St. George, Utah. For tickets and detailed information call the Box office at 435-652-7800 or book your tickets directly over the web by visiting www.dsutix.com.
