ST. GEORGE – Distracted driving led to a domino-effect collision in St. George Wednesday evening when an 18-year-old woman using a cellphone crashed into a parked truck, knocking the truck into another parked vehicle. The truck then continued down the street, ending up in the front yard of a residence.
“Unfortunately, she was playing on her phone and not paying attention,” St. George Police Sgt. Dave Williams said.
Just after 7 p.m., the woman was driving west on 1370 North in a red Ford Crown Victoria with a child riding as a passenger in the car. The woman was using her cellphone while driving, Williams said, and crashed into an unoccupied Dodge Ram that was parked on the side of the road. The impact knocked the Dodge into another unoccupied parked vehicle.
“The Dodge continued down the road and stopped in someone’s front yard,” Williams said.
The child in the vehicle was not injured in the crash. The woman was treated at the scene of the accident for facial injuries.
“She sustained some minor injuries to her face that were caused by the phone hitting her face,” Williams said.
The Crown Victoria was totaled in the collision.
Neighborhood residents at the scene said the Dodge truck belongs to some people who are away on vacation.
“The neighbors got ahold of them,” Kent Halladay said, “because they’ve gotta make a decision if they want to have a tow truck pull that truck off the lawn and storage it, or if the people want to let somebody put their truck back up here.”
The woman in the Crown Victoria was cited for distracted driving.
“We were lucky that no one was (badly) injured,” Williams said. “It’s a reminder you’ve gotta put the phone down.”
“Texts and music and phone calls will wait,” he added. “Nothing is that important.”
The St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.
